Daily Natural Health Tip #1

A huge mistake that a lot of people make is not eating enough green leafy vegetables in their diet.

I remember when I was young and my mom gave us salad every night with dinner, which was great for my health, but I got so sick of the same old salads night after night that I ended up not eating it for years.

Try to keep it interesting so that your whole family can enjoy this vital ingredient. There are dozens and dozens of types of salad dressings from the classic vinaigrette to creamy dressings and even yogurt based ones. There is no reason you cannot have several different kinds on hand so that each night the family can choose for themselves.

One of my favorite meals is healthy and delicious and most importantly easy and fast to make. It’s a simple and yummy chicken and tortellini salad.

Here is the basic full meal salad recipe, more an idea really because you can have as much of the ingredients as you prefer:

  • Regular green leafy or romaine lettuce
  • Rainbow Tortillini
  • Chicken, you can cut it up in chunks and cook it on the stove or slice chicken breast as thick or thin as you like
  • Toasted slivered almonds
  • You can cut up some mozzarella cheese if you like but I usually don’t bother.
  • Ranch dressing

I usually cook the pasta early in the day and refrigerate it until dinnertime. It’s delicious cold, it’s like a pasta salad with lettuce or visa versa.

By simply incorporating more leafy greens and whole fruits into your overall diet you are going to slash type 2 diabetes risk drastically.

You know what they say ‘You don’t make friends with salad’… but seriously, I have the same problem. My Mom too made salads every night with our dinner that I can bring myself to eat it anymore. I’m going to try out this recipe though, sounds tasty.

  • 8 Gun Cabinet // Oct 14, 2009 at 10:39 pm

A agree with eating green leafy vegetables as main part of your diet. However, when I am shopping in the grocery store I find the fresh vegetables and the meats are the most expensive ingredients. This makes it hard to add the leafy green vegetables to too many meals.

  • 11 tokay gecko // Oct 17, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Nice, and if you can get your vegetables from local sources all the better. But nooooo eck! Ranch dressing!! I hope that nobody would destroy their salad with Ranch dressing which amounts to mayonnaise with high fructose corn syrup. Any dressing with sugar is poison in my book. Vinegar, olive oil, garlic, onion and spices is the way to go!

  • 15 Grant // Oct 19, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Good call, veggies are undervalued in today’s people. And some think they are getting their fix with a ceasar salad, unaware that the dressing almost nullifies the benefits of the greens. Great blog.

  • 24 Natural Remedies // Oct 22, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Greens and fruits can indeed reduce your risk for diabetes, and so many people fail to eat them. Of course, just eating greens and fruits isn’t going to do the trick all by itself, but it’s a step in the right direction!

Oh, and ranch dressing is fine as long as you only put a little bit on. The problem is that too many people will pile it on their salads, creating more risks to their health than the salad reduces. It’s all about moderation, which too many people are bad at.

Good tips, I hope people follow them.

I hate vegetables so much, in fact, my mother used to force me to eat them and I would throw them under the table for the dog on a nightly basis. But I’ve learned to give them a shot as I’m trying to lose weight and when you give veggies a chance, they’re really not all that bad. Broccoli, carrots, corn, all veggies I hated when I was younger.

It’s significant to note that there’s a question about leafy green vegetables and oxalic acid, a logically occurring substance found from animals, plants and even humans. If oxalic acid happen to be too concentrated in your bloodstream (in the form of oxalates), it can have undesirable affects for some individual such as gout and interfering with calcium absorption.
Some studies have been revealed that cooking green leafy vegetables can diminish the oxalic acid.
With the studies and health professionals suggested that the oxalic acid content in vegetables is too low to cause worry, except you are susceptible for gout or need to boost your calcium intake.
Just keep in mind that these studies also show that having a healthy digestion, eating your food well and decreasing stress during meals is an ideal way to make sure you get the best benefits from your green leafy vegetables.
Every person agrees that leafy green vegetables are a great means to get the nutrients that you need for a healthy and a great life.

There is also the potential health benefits or not consuming harmful pesticides.I also agree that anything that is grown in the most natural way possible will be most nutritious and healthy.I had heard tales of people still using potential harmful pesticides and still getting away with it under the organic banner which I hope is a rare case.
