The evolution of Yoga began over 5,000 years ago. It was practiced in Hinduism as a spiritual practice and theory but over the years it has become an enlightening balance of spiritual and physical elements.
Over the last decade or so Yoga has grown to become one of the most popular forms of exercise throughout the entire world. People practice it from Indian to China, to America and even South America and Europe. It is popular with celebrities as well as people like me and you.
This form of spiritual and physical exercise teaches us to relax, have patience and stretch both emotionally and bodily. Yoga is the ultimate way to stay fit and healthy at any age. It is a versatile form of exercise as well and can be easily modified to suit anyone no matter their physical health.
Yoga was brought to North America by Swami Vivekananda, back in the early 19th century. It was Vivekananda who founded the now famous Vedanta Society. He was sure that this practice from India had the capacity to help those who had let themselves fall victim to the materialism of capitalist societies. Swami Vivekananda believed that by practicing yoga people would be able to finally achieve spiritual well-being. And many did just that while improving body health at the same time.
Yoga as we know it today is a combination of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation. It is one of the most exciting, healthy and natural ways for a person to become fitter both in the mind and the body.
