Maximus the Grizzly Shot and Left to Rot

October 2nd, 2009 · 61 Comments

Big Grizzly Killed

I got this in my email box today and had to share, even though it’s sad, it’s important. It’s a message from Defenders of Wildlife:

Maximus the grizzly bear was “a big, beautiful, wild bear,” according to grizzly specialist Mike Madel. “He kept to himself, stayed out of trouble.”

But he was gunned down in the prime of his life. Left to rot in a Montana hayfield, his badly decomposed body was discovered a month after being ruthlessly shot.

His killer is still at large.

It is possible for you can help bring lawless wildlife killers to justice and respond quickly to other wildlife emergencies.

We’ve quickly moved to offer a reward to bring Maximus’s killer to justice. But sadly, this bear’s story is not unique.

Poachers have recently ended the lives of some of our most endangered animals including Florida panthers, southwest gray wolves and California condors. In Idaho, a female wolf pup was illegally gunned down from a roadway. And a thriving black market in bear gallbladders and other parts is fueling a slaughter of bears across the nation.

Help us post rewards for poachers and alert the public as we aid law enforcement in the capture of these heartless people. Please make a donation today.

For more than a decade, Defenders of Wildlife has worked with state and federal agencies, offering more than $245,000 in rewards to bring these ruthless wildlife poachers to justice.

We’re also pressing Congress to pass the Bear Protection Act to end the trade in bear parts that encourages a terrible poaching plague.

None of this work is possible without people like you.

I also got the same mail, I will stand against these ruthless killers

  • 2 muxin // Oct 3, 2009 at 7:49 am

Killing animals especially endangered ones just for fun is absolutely cruel, we cannot tolerate such an act. I like what you’re doing collecting donation as a reward for capturing those killers, I really hope it works. This is a global problem, in Indonesia we also have this kind of problems. They’re killing rhinos, elephants, orang utans, tigers, endangered bird species, sharks, and many others everyday for money or just for fun. I hope what you’ve done with defenders of wildlife can be applied too in my country so the killing can at least be reduced. Keep up the nobel work, I wish you all the best in protecting the wildlife for our next generation.

It is quite sad to see animals being tortured and killed…It has to be stopped…something has to be done. Thanks for sharing the photo.

I must agree, if we do not take action our wildlife may be reduced to nothingness. We humans should protect other beings in this world otherwise we will also suffer if balance is lost.

Is sad and really bad that the govt’s of the world can’t protect their wildlife. Unfortunately USA is the biggest market for animal products from all over the world.

    Thanks

This is just terrible. It breaks my heart to read such things. I don’t understand why people do things like this. Hunting used to be used for a purpose. Feeding the local scavengers never was one of them.

I hope someone didnt take your earlier post of “How to Not be Eaten by Bears when Camping” too literally. I think its disgusting that poachers can do this.

It seems that children always have respect for animals. I wonder why it is in our culture that people can grow up to treat animals so terribly. The education system is failing to teach people something so simple. Very sad.

I absolutely support hunting animals but, only if the animals resources are used properly. Killing animals for the sack of killing animals is wrong.

Greetings & thanks for stopping by. I became a vegan after my near-fatal car crash in 1993. The crash happened while I was going to work in a suit & tie. It changed my life forever. Among other things, my near-death experience gave me a new appreciation of life, both human & nonhuman. I believe that all life has equal value & should be respected. Killing animals for any reason is not respecting life. For me, going vegan is good for the mind, body, and soul.

As a human being we have some responsibilities & its sad to see that how we humans are treating other living creatures. There are laws, but some one have to be there to see either it is obeyed or not. Animals are the part of Life cycle, if we killing them for no reason, it will directly effect the environment.

Poor ol’ Maximus. He was powerful, majestic and a beautiful animal. Grizzly bears have been on the endangered species list since 1975. We should be stewards of the earth and its creatures not callous poachers!

It makes me sick how predators as well as other wild animals are shot for no reason or even for sport.
Governors like Palin in Alaska allow this ruthless killing to go in their states with no consequences.

In my opinion animals should not be killed just for sport, if you’re not fully utilizing the resources of the animal it’s always sad, and when it’ll illegal like this it’s even worse!
