We can all make a difference when it comes to helping save the environment. Global warming and all the other environmental issues we are facing took some time to build up and to get our of these messes it is going take a lot of work, but this doesn’t mean we should get discouraged because it’s more than the big things that are going to make the difference, it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.
Here are some simple changes you can make in your everyday life to help the planet recover from the wounds we have inflicted upon it:
1: Walk sometimes. You don’t need to take your car everywhere you go. If your job is in walking distance, or you’re able to ride a bike to get there, then do it. Not only are you helping to save the planet, you’re exercising and helping yourself stay fit. Most big cities that have the worst traffic jams also have bike paths and walking trails for pedestrians. You’d be surprised how much more convenient they were for you.
2: Pick it up! People litter, that’s just the way it is. You’ll see plastic bottles, cigarette packs, etc, all lying on the ground. It wouldn’t hurt or inconvenience you at all to pick them up as you walk by. If you see a plastic bag blowing by you, grab it and put it in the nearest trashcan. Most places have Recycling bins set up all over. Sure, it’s not your fault that some people just don’t care. But you do! Show you care by being good to your mother.
3: Use less energy in your home. Whether you work from home or just like to lounge around and watch TV, there are all sorts of ways you can conserve energy in your home and do your part to help the world. If you’re on the computer, you don’t need any lights on. The monitor provides enough light. And if not, open the shades to let the sun in.
4: Use energy efficient items. Hybrid cars, washers/dryers, water heaters, etc. A one-time purchase can have you helping every other day of your life.
5: The tree huggers (I happen to be one) will love you for this. Plant a tree! Why shouldn’t you? Think of it this way: for every piece of paper you use during the day, a tree was cut down for that. Giving back one would help a great deal. Check out Treegivers.com to learn about a cool tree planting program.

I think sometimes turning off electronics and unplugging everything is very healthy for us. It is good to try a do it a little bit whenever we can set time aside for it.
The 3 Rs – Reduce first, then Re-use and lastly Recycle.

The rather depressing thing is that the “entire” world production of crude oil (at maximum current capacity) is about one and one half liters per day for every man, woman and child on the planet.
We Americans use approximately six liters per day per person on average.
In order to use only our fair share of the world’s crude, we Americans would have to cut our daily lifestyle usage of crude by more than 2/3.
The suggestions you make here are great. However, the bottom line is that Americans are, well, Americans.
I cannot see even the most environmentally friendly person cutting usage so drastically.
Just three examples of environmental icons and their personal use of energy while they are asking others to sacrifice.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that Americans live so well. However, it all seems hypocritical for us to be preaching to others while the facts speak for themselves.
Oh, the examples:
Example #1. Al Gore maintains a 10,000 square foot home for himself and family. His energy bill alone for that home is $30,000 per year.
Arnold (the Terminator) sells hybrids to the public, and then drives around in his brand new silver Porche. Definitely not an energy saver.
John Travolta asks his fellow citizens to save energy, then purchases five jet planes for his personal use.
In other words, how many people would seriously believe that these three environmental icons would cut their own energy consumption to one and one half liters of crude per day?
They are suggesting though that others to do it.
Al Gore gave a rather nice presentation in Copenhagen today regarding the ice cap. That is wonderful, but it doesn’t do a thing about his own huge energy footprint.
And, that’s the way most folks are. They feel comforted by band aid measures on a personal level. But when it comes to sacrificing real comfort for the environment, that doesn’t happen.
And, so, most Africans will get by on one CUP of crude per day on average to our six liters.

People don’t need ideas on how to save energy, they need the right mindset.
I live in a dormitory with 15 other people. And some of them never switch of anything. Whereever they go, they switch on light, TV, heater, but they never switch it off when they leave. So annoying. They definitely know what they are doing, but they are to selfimportant to spend 10 seconds of their valuable time to switch these thins off.

I like your ideas – and believe they all come down to one simple notion – think about the energy you are using and are going to use. You don’t really have to be a tree hugger to understand the benefits of lowering your energy use. Think of the time you will save if you plan you automobile trips so that you get all your errands done in one trip. Think of what you will save if you don’t need to run to the store as often.
Don’t just use more efficient appliances, use the appliances more efficiently. Do you really need to wash in warm or hot water? Can you do you drying loads back to back to take advantage of the dryer already being warmed up. Do you really need to wash some of your stuff as often as you do.
